Virtuosi of Houston, a premier young artists' chamber orchestra, continues to receive critical acclaim as it celebrates its 17th Season of music education and performance excellence. Virtuosi's talented instrumentalists, aged 11 to 18, are selected by audition for their ability to play at the exemplary level required in a smaller chamber orchestra. These focused young musicians are challenged to reach their full potential in a unique dual conductor structure directed by two Moores School of Music- University of Houston professors.
Virtuosi of Houston's foremost goal is to help aspiring young musicians from all socio-economic backgrounds pursue their dreams of careers as professional musicians. Pre-professional training programs include 90+ hours of pre-concert rehearsals in a custom designed studio in Memorial City Mall; a small ensemble program; a concerto competition; master classes; and a small ensemble summer workshop. All Studio rehearsals and events are open to the public. Houston Symphony patrons also enjoy frequent pre-concert and intermission performances by Virtuosi of Houston small ensembles at Jones Hall.
Virtuosi of Houston is noted for its success in developing emerging artists sought after by prestigious music schools and conservatories. Over the past three years, 100% of their graduating seniors have pursued a higher education; over 70% of which continue their music education at the college level as performance or music education majors.
